Red is the colour of Santa Claus

Santa Claus is a famous symbol for Christmas and presents. Making presents is fun. And this man represents making presents. He is a friendly elderly man with a long white beard who is a bit chubby and wears a long red coat with white fur. We don’t know about his underwear but he has a big bag for presents and a rood.

Everybody knows that picture. It goes back to the 19th century. It was created about 1844 in Germany after a tale called Struwwelpeter. A bit later the picture of Santa Claus arrived with German immigrants in the US. It is said that the cartoonist Thomas Nast represented Santa Claus in 1863, during Civil War, that very same way distributing presents to soldiers of the Union.

In the 1930’s the Coca-Cola Company adapted the picture of Santa Claus. Since then they use it for their Christmas publicity. Today it is impossible to imagine Santa Claus without his red coat. This publicity campaign brought Santa Claus’s picture all over the world. Now he is famous.

However, Santa Claus brings the presents to all who are good. Bad boys and girls get the rood, only the good ones get a present. What kind of present you get that depends but underwear and lingerie is always part of it.

Since early childhood underwear and pyjamas are a traditional Christmas present. Yes, it’s true we don’t know if that is Santa Claus’s first choice or if granny and grandpa had no better guess. But one thing is sure underwear for Christmas can be really good fun. Red underwear with a bit of white fur suits not only Santa Claus or your partner but also you. I love it to dress up as Santa.

But why is red the colour of Santa Claus? What view of the world is transmitted with it? Right, Christmas is related to presents but there is much more to it. It is part of the Holliday Season, the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the celebration of love and the time of the year we usually spend with family.

Red as colour has opposite meanings. Red has positive and negative connotations. Positive is it for example as the symbol for love, life and the power of blood or in other words the power of family. Red is a warm colour and so is red underwear.
