The elastics ensure that the stockings stay in place even without a garter belt or suspender. Leggings are tight, form fitting hosiery which extend from the waist, much like pants. In the US, they are also called tights and are usually made of lycra, nylon and cotton. Stockings are usually called as hose and cover the lower part of the leg. The word stockings are used to refer to those kinds which need a garter belt, another kind of lingerie which goes around the waist so much like a belt.
